[Wellness Wednesday] Reiki Sensations & Side Effects

Happy Wellness Wednesday folks!  Today we continue our chat about Reiki by answering two more of your Reiki questions.

If you missed last week’s Wellness Wednesday on the origin of Reiki, check it out here then come back and join us for today’s chat on the sensations and side effects you may experience during and after a Reiki session.

Reiki Sensations

“How does Reiki feel?” is one of the most popular questions I receive about Reiki.  Everyone’s Reiki experience is different so there’s no way to determine what sensations you will feel.  You might even experience completely different sensations during each session but here are some of the most popular sensations people report:

  • Changes in body temperature
  • Deep relaxation
  • Overwhelming emotions
  • “Phantom hands” (the feeling of hands that are not the practitioner’s on or near the body)
  • Temporary paralysis-like heaviness in limbs
  • Tingling

Most people report sensations in their hands and the crown of their head.  Remember that many people do not experience any sensations at all.  This does not mean your session did not work.  Sensations are not required for Reiki to be helpful.  Some sensations may feel good however some may also feel uncomfortable.  You always have a right to inform your practitioner that you need a break if the sensations become overwhelming.

Side Effects

Many people will tell you there are no side effects of Reiki but I personally disagree.  It important to note that those who say there are no side effects are classifying side effects as hugely negative and potentially harmful.  Now, I agree that Reiki does not cause harm however all forms of healing can have an impact on our mental, physical, emotional or spiritual being.  The side effects you may experience after Reiki are similar to the soreness you experience after a chiropractic appointment or the half day nap you need following a heavy therapy session.

Many people do not experience side effects however here are a few things to keep an eye out for:

  • Crying spells
  • Dehydration
  • Disorientation or ‘brain fog’
  • Elation
  • Exhaustion
  • Flu-like symptoms
  • Frequent urination or bowel movements
  • Headache
  • Intense or overwhelming emotions
  • Nausea
  • Or any continuation of sensations felt during your session

These side effects are simply your body and mind detoxing.  Effects are temporary and typically don’t last more than 48 hours following session.  Side effects can be prevented and treated with the practice of good self care, especially within the first few days to first week after session (depending on how often you receive Reiki or what all you have going on).  This includes drinking lots of water, eating healthy meals at regular intervals, taking time to reflect and release, practicing good sleep hygiene, and paying close attention to what your body needs.

I always encourage clients to make extra time for self to allow for reflection and rest and offer the opportunity for them to contact me with questions or concerns to address potential side effects.
