[Moon Cycle Monday] What is Endometriosis?

March is Endometriosis Awareness Month so every Monday this month we will cover all things Endometriosis!

What Is Endometriosis?

Endometriosis is a condition in which tissue from the lining of the uterus is found in other parts of the body.  Although this tissue may no longer be located in the uterus it can still respond to the natural hormonal changes that occur throughout the menstrual cycle, which can cause inflammation and pain in the areas where lesions are located.

1 in 10 women are impacted by endometriosis

***I’m always curious about statistic and where individuals who experience marginalization fall in all of this.  Does this number include queer or trans identifying individuals?  Also black women are historically misdiagnosed (we will talk more about that later in the month).

Causes of Endometriosis

There are a number of theories regarding the causes of Endometriosis.  Like with many other conditions, there are a number of potential causes making it challenging to find to a definitive cause.  Potential causes include: genetics, retrograde menstruation (menstruation flowing backwards), and toxins in our environment.  Read more about these here. Other theories that are more metaphysical or holistic in nature suggest that endometriosis (like many other reproductive health conditions) is a manifestation of the emotional state of the individual, and how their connection/feelings towards their own feminine nature.  We will talk more about this later this month! Endometriosis is a serious reproductive health condition that can impact the life of the individual as well as that of their loved ones.  It is important to see a doctor if you are experiencing painful or otherwise life interrupting periods.
