[Moon Cycle Monday] Menstrual Cycle & Moon Connection

Today is our very first Moon Cycle Monday: Our weekly chat on everything hormone & menstruation related.

Many of you may be wondering why Moon Cycle Monday vs Menstruation or Menstrual Cycle Monday (all of which were in the running for potential names by the way).  Of course there is a method to the madness and today’s discussion on the connection between the menstrual cycle and the moon should shed some light.

So let’s dive in…

Menstrual Cycle Phases

Did you know the menstrual cycle has 4 phases?

You read that right…4 phases! We often think of the Menstrual cycle as that time of the month when we are bleeding or at most: when we are bleeding and when we are ovulating, but really its way more intricate than that.  There are the Menstrual, Follicular, Ovulation, and Luteal phases and each phase corresponds with a change in hormone levels which can cause physical, mental, emotional and even spiritual changes (we will get more into that in later posts).

Moon Cycle Phases

The moon also has phases.  Many people know about the full moon.  Some may even know about the new moon however between these two phases are several other phases.  The 4 major phases being: Full, 1st Quarter, New and 3rd Quarter.

Many indigenous cultures and even western scientists have identified that the moon has an impact on our mood, energy and even our fertility and menstruation.  Some cultures believe that menstruation follows the phases of the moon.  Scientific studies have even shown that fertility rates & ovulation fluctuate in conjunction with the phases of the moon.  This is said to be the result of the amount of light our bodies receive which also closely resembles the Earth’s response to cycles of light (plants thrive and grow more when the moon is full because they receive more light).  Dope right?!

Not to mention: the time between full moons average about 29 days which is right around the 28-32 day cycle that is considered a healthy menstrual cycle.

A Holistic Perspective

As a holistic practitioner, I believe that many of our current health concerns are caused & impacted by complications in our society.  We have gotten so far from our indigenous traditions and the simplicity of life that we have become disconnected from our bodies.  While technology and science are great, indigenous methods of living in tune with and engaging with nature are a powerful resource in helping us to understand and heal ourselves.

I take this approach with mental health in the therapy room and think our hormonal health is no different.  And so Moon Cycle Monday was born.
